Programme overview

What this programme covers

Planning Operations begins with the groundwork: what planning operations is, why it matters, and how its core domains and roles fit together. It then turns to forecasting — what to forecast, the main families of method, and how to read the components of a demand history — and from there to whether a forecast is any good: the core error metrics, the difference between accuracy and bias, and how error analysis drives improvement rather than just reporting. Later modules build on that base, twelve in all across a 48-hour programme. Three tools come with it to download: a Forecast Accuracy Tracker, a Planning KPI Dashboard and a Demand Supply S&OP Balance. Assessment is a single 30-question final exam at a 65% pass mark. Because it starts from the groundwork rather than assuming a planning background, it suits anyone newly responsible for a forecast or a planning KPI.

Practical outcomes

What you will be able to do

  1. 01What planning operations is and where it sits: the strategic, tactical and operational horizons, the four core domains — demand, supply, inventory and capacity — the roles that own each, and the stages of planning maturity
  2. 02Forecasting demand: what to forecast and at what level, qualitative against quantitative methods, and reading level, trend, seasonality and noise out of a demand history
  3. 03Judging a forecast by the number rather than the impression: MAD, MAPE and RMSE, accuracy against bias, the tracking signal, and error analysis turned into specific actions with the Forecast Accuracy Tracker
  4. 04The demand planning cycle and its cadence — a consensus forecast built from a statistical baseline plus business input, new products and items reaching end of life, and running the demand review — then why inventory exists, service level and fill rate, safety stock, reorder points and EOQ
  5. 05Inventory segmentation with ABC and XYZ, differentiated policies by segment, multi-echelon principles, slow-moving and obsolete stock; then supply planning — MRP logic, lead-time offsetting, lot sizing, rough-cut capacity and constraints
  6. 06S&OP as a five-step cycle with scenarios and an executive review, S&OE on the weekly horizon, IBP connecting the operational plans to the financial plan, and planning KPIs with leading separated from lagging — modelled on the Demand & Supply Balance sheet and the Planning KPI Dashboard
